Notes about East-Asian Languages

Special note about using Chinese

Windows computers CAN display Chinese, but only if the East Asian Language Pack is installed. Otherwise, you will only see garbage characters on your screen. Pinyin solves that problem by allowing Chinese to be displayed in the Latin alphabet (the 26 letter alphabet English is written in).

You CAN write in English and the other person will receive the Chinese characters if they have the Asian Language pack installed. This is the suggested method if you are communicating with a person in China. The Chinese character set provides a more accurate translation than using Pinyin.

Limits about Pinyin

Pinyin does NOT as accurately represent Chinese as the Chinese characters do. For this reason, if you can, use the Chinese characters.

Due to Pinyin’s limits, you can translate from English into Pinyin, but not from Pinyin into English. This is because many nuances that Chinese characters contain are lost in Pinyin, leading to poor translation quality. This is not a limit of the Moka system; it is a limit of Pinyin itself.

Installing the East Asian Languages

Windows XP
  • Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options
  • Click on the Languages Tab
  • Put a check in front of “Install files for East Asian Languages
  • Select “Apply”
Windows Vista
  • Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options
  • Click on the Languages Tab
  • Follow the instructions for installing a new language pack
